ALPINE, N.J. — Every month, 80,000 Bergen County mothers turn to Alpine's Jennifer Law for dining tips, fashion advice and ideas for things to do with their kids.
They are the readers of " Bergen Mama ," a digital venture Law started in 2010 to service the busy, on-the-go Bergen County mom population.
"We want to give these moms easy access to the coolest styles and the newest trends and services around the county," said Law, who has two daughters. "It is meant to make their lives easier by giving them quick info with a few clicks."
Examples of recent Bergen Mama articles include advice on buying a swingset for your child and a review of a new Italian restaurant in Ramsey . Bergen Mama also posts weekly roundups of things to do in the county.
Law, 44, does not come from a writing background. She moved to Alpine from Manhattan in 2008 while working as the CFO of a hedge fund. She says she was disappointed with the lack of digital media servicing the area.
"In Manhattan everything is at your fingertips in terms of finding stuff to do online," Law told Daily Voice. "I wanted something like that for moms here."
Bergen Mama publishes between four and five articles a week and sends out an email newsletter twice a week. Law controls the editorial direction of the site, but uses freelancers to ghostwrite the content, all of which is written in a friendly, conversational tone.
"We want it to be very 'mom to mom' relatable type articles," Law said. "A lot of my time is spent coming up with ideas based on what I see our readers are interested in."
Two years ago Law left her job at the hedge fund to work on Bergen Mama full time. She says the company is now profitable, and looking to expand.
"I would like to go to all counties around the New York City area and maybe franchise it out to other counties across the country," said Law, who is eyeing an expansion before the end of the year. "I see us as a large digital media company. A slick, metropolitan-style digital resource on a county basis."
