ENGLEWOOD, N.J. -- Benzel-Busch in Englewood has a long history of fathers and sons behind it.
Brothers Jay and Artie Agresta say they are proud to be carrying on their family's legacy as a premier dealer of Audi, smart, and Mercedes-Benz..
Although part of their story begins when Benzel-Busch was purchased by Joe Agresta, Sr in 1978, the two say they they like tracing the father/son dynamic back to the turn of the century.
"My great grandfather was a blacksmith in Italy," explained Jay. "He came to the U.S. at the turn of the century and established himself in Hoboken. He taught my grandfather to be a blacksmith but my grandfather realized that the opportunities for smithing in New Jersey were limited and so he adapted his skill to become a heavy truck dealer representing the Diamond T brand.
"My father learned the business from my grandfather and adapted to selling cars instead of trucks. When he bought Benzel-Busch, he began teaching me and Arthur the operation by assigning us to various jobs. Over time, he exposed us to every part of the dealership operations and when each of us graduated from college we came to work full-time."
Adds Artie: "He taught us about doing things right and doing them once rather than being haphazard with our work. Place attention on details. Create and maintain long-term relationships with our team members, our manufacturers, our suppliers and most of all, our clients. It’s never about one purchase or experience."
The two attribute their success to "being here and being involved every day."
"We live this business and we are constantly striving to improve," stressed Jay, a Rockleigh resident. "Always raising our own bar and our own measures of success."
