Englewood Man Does More Than Drive For SilverStreak

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. – Robert Miller went through his latest self-reinvention last month: He opened SilverStreak Limousine, based in his Englewood hometown.

The very name of the business, which serves the tri-state area, references the silver hair of the 65-year-old entrepreneur.

Miller in past career lives has worked for the apparel manufacturing business owned by his family, the communications firm run by his wife -- TV and radio talent Sara Lee Kessler -- and the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey.

So why a car service?

“I love to drive,” Miller said, “and I love schmoozing and meeting new people.”

Customers appreciate Miller's sparkly personality as much as they like his shiny new vehicle, which seats seven and has plenty of room for luggage.

Soli Foger, an Englewood architect, is among Miller's fans.

“He’s a wonderful person,” said Foger, already a repeat customer. “When I know that he’s going to pick me up, I look forward to seeing him just as I look forward to seeing a friend.”

What also motivated Miller to professionally drive in this high-tech world was the chance to provide a personal touch. He likes to think he provides more than transportation.

“Sometimes people don’t want to talk at all,” he said. “They just want to look out the window or do their email. I provide free wifi in the car. But sometimes they want to chat about the car, about me, about life.”

He sometimes finds himself playing armchair psychologist. For instance, he heard a young female passenger talking on the phone with a friend about her pregnancy.

“It was obvious she didn’t know what to do,” Miller said. “By the time she got off the phone, she was sniffling and obviously upset.”

He told her she could sit in the car for a while, offered her water and a Kleenex and reassured her.

What satisfies Miller the most is that people book him to drive their elderly parents and other family members.

“The ultimate demonstration of trust,” he said, “is that I’ve driven their children.”
