ROUNDUP: Rain Moves Bergen, Passaic Memorial Day Celebrations Inside

Various municipalities throughout Bergen County have either cancelled Monday's Memorial Day ceremonies or moved them inside because expected rain -- although Fair Lawn was proceeding as planned.

UPDATE: Several towns in Bergen and Passaic counties defied rainfall predictions and won, treating locals to Memorial Day parades .

Fair Lawn Mayor John Cosgrove announced just after 8 a.m. Monday: "The parade is on for today!! If the line of March is ready we may start fifteen minutes early at 10:15 a.m." Ceremonies were to follow at the circle on the Avenue of Heroes.

Hawthorne , as well, is proceeding with its noon service and 1:30 p.m. parade.

Englewood officials moved their Memorial Day ceremony into Liberty School on Tenafly Road, beginning at 10 a.m., followed by brief presentations onstage.

Other towns that have either changed plans or cancelled everything outright include Dumont , Mahwah , New Milford , Oradell and Waldwick .

In Rochelle Park , a memorial Mass is still set for 8 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church and the ceremony is relocated to the American Legion Hall on West Passaic Street, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Food and refreshments will be served indoors around noon.

In Norwood , Memorial Day services scheduled at Highland Cemetery were moved to Memorial Hall at Town Hall, beginning at 11 a.m. A corner dedication in memory of Major Mark Welch will take place as planned, rain or shine, Prospect Street and Ash Road at 1 p.m.

Allendale was preparing to cancel its parade and move the ceremony into the Brookside School for 9:45 a.m.

Garfield , which cancelled its parade, will hold memorial services at City Hall at 11 a.m.

Hasbrouck Heights officials were moving their ceremony into VFW Post 4591 on Springfield Avenue, beginning at 10 a.m.

Haworth cancelled its parade and picnic, but an 8:30 a.m. Mass for military and emergency responders was still on at Sacred Heart Church, followed by the placing of wreaths -- rain or shine -- at the Fire Department memorial at Borough Hall. Officials were trying to arrange a brief service with the police honor guard at Borough Hall at 6 p.m., Mayor John Smart said.

Ho-Ho-Kus moved veterans events to the council chambers at Borough Hall, beginning at 11 a.m.

Lodi moved its police memorial service and award presentation to the June 15 council meeting.

In Lyndhurst , the Veterans Alliance will be holding ceremonies at the senior building at 11 a.m.

Paramus moved its ceremonies to the senior center, beginning at 10 a.m.

Ramsey officials will conduct the annual Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. in the high school auditorium after cancelling the borough parade.

Although Rutherford cancelled its parade, a scheduled 8 a.m. wreath toss at the Union Avenue bridge and 8:30 a.m. rifle salute ceremony at Sunset Park will continue rain or shine.

Saddle River's ceremony will be at its Borough Hall, also beginning at 11 a.m.

Tenafly will be holding its ceremony at the Elks Lodge at 10 a.m.

Wallington moved its ceremony to the high school gym, also beginning at 10 a.m.

Woodcliff Lake cancelled its parade and moved the 9 a.m. ceremony into the VFW Hall on Broadway.

Wyckoff ’s ceremonies were set to begin with a 9 a.m. Firefighters Memorial Service at Firehouse No. 1, behind Town Hall. A Veterans Memorial Service was to be held at 10 a.m. on the green of the Wyckoff Reformed Church on Wyckoff Avenue, site of the township’s War Memorial. Rain could move the veterans service inside.
