TENAFLY, N.J. — Thara Prashad had a record deal and performed with artists like John Legend and Jay Sean before she decided what she really wanted to do: teach yoga in Tenafly.
"I had a great run," said Prashad, who is married to pop singer Jay Sean.
"I was doing my thing and performing. I had one of those 'ah-ha' moments — I didn't want to do it anymore."
After spending years on her career as a singer, Prashad dropped everything and attended a 9-week boot camp on how to be a yoga instructor.
Nine years later, she co-owns Fire Shaper Yoga in Tenafly with her husband.
Fire Shaper takes its name to heart and offers yoga classes in a heated room.
"The heat is such a friend to most people because it’s really healing and helps people to focus," Prashad said.
Although there are other hot yoga courses offered in Englewood and Cresskill, Prashad's Tenafly location was awarded the best yoga studio in Bergen County for the past two years.
Prashad recognizes that every studio caters to a certain type of individual.
"I’m a different owner than [another] owner and the energy we bring into our space is going to be different than theirs," Prashad said.
Many of her customers are older and tend to be female, but a high-energy course called a "burn class" has more appeal with younger and male clientele.
