ENGLEWOOD, N.J. — An 21-year-old Englewood woman has taken up the cause of her orphaned cousin, who lost both parents within a month of one another this summer.Amanda Ocampo had raised more than $5,000 as of early Sunday, Oct. 4, through a GoFundMe account established four days earlier.
Her cousin, Lawrence Gicaro of Bergenfield, is grieving the loss of his mother, Natividad, who succumbed in August to a rare bone marrow cancer, and his father, Jovic, who died suddenly at work in early September after complaining of a headache.
"People our age are used to our parents providing for us and opening doors for different opportunities," Ocampo said. "Now that Lawrence's parents are gone I don’t want him to not have those opportunities — I want him to be able to survive."
Gicaro, who is taking the semester off from Bergen Community College, said he plans on using the proceeds to continue his education and to help cover immediate expenses.
"Although it is a tough time for my family and me, I remind myself to stay strong for my mom and dad," he said. "I know they would want me to continue to do great thing with my life and to maintain my positive outlook."
