Football great Lombardi was born June 11, 1913 and would be 104 on Sunday. He died of cancer at age 57 on Sept. 3, 1970.

He lived in Oradell with his wife and two sons while assistant coach to the Giants in the late 1950s.

He started his football coaching career in 1939 at St. Cecilia High School in Englewood, which closed in 1986.

He also lived in Englewood, and the city council in 2013 ceremonially dedicated Mountain View Road, the street where Lombardi once resided, as "Vince Lombardi Way."

He was an assistant coach at Fordham and at the United States Military Academy and was head coach for the Green Bay Packers from 1959 to 1967 and the Washington Redskins in 1969.

He never had a losing season as a head coach in the NFL and was considered to be one of the best coaches in NFL history.

His deep New Jersey roots have deemed him worthy of an exit on the NJ Turnpike. The Vince Lombardi Service Area and park-and-ride is the northernmost rest area on the New Jersey Turnpike, at mileposts 116E on the Eastern Spur and 115.5W on the Western Spur.

Outside the gift shop is a plaque about his life, which notes that he is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
