Bergen County Exec Releases Mosquito-Eating Fish In Wallington

WALLINGTON, N.J. -- Bergen bit back again on Monday when County Executive Jim Tedesco joined county health and mosquito control officials in releasing a school of minnow-like fish in a Wallington Lake to help combat the West Nile and Zika viruses.

The silvery Gambusia fish -- barely and inch or two long -- feed on mosquito larvae.

The annual release -- this time at Samuel Nelkin County Park on Rose Street -- "is an environmentally friendly practice used in tandem with other methods to control the mosquito population and prevent mosquito-borne illness," Tedesco said Monday.

It's part of the "Bergen Bites Back" program.
