Hackensack Police Detective Among Korean Americans Honored By Bergen

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- A Hackensack police detective was among several Korean Americans honored by Bergen County officials for their service to the community.

Detective James Han received his award from Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco and members of the county freeholder board during a Korean American Day ceremony Tuesday night in Hackensack.

Begun in 2003, on the 100th anniversary of the arrival of 102 Korean immigrants in Hawaii who had come to work in the sugar cane fields, Korean American Day is a day to honor all Korean Americans and recognize their impact and contributions.

Also honored at Tuesday night's event:

  • The Palisades Park-based Korean American Association of New Jersey;
  • The Korean American Citizens Association of New Jersey, also of Palisades Park;
  • Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE) of Closter;
  • Taehee Jung, of Cliffside Park: owner, choreographer and dance instructor at the Jung Korean Dance Academy;
  • Seungchan Kim of Tenafly, the director of the New York Music School;
  • Kay Rhee, executive director of the Camerata New Jersey Foundation in Northvale.
