William Oscar Moon, 91, Englewood Resident

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. – William Oscar Moon, of Englewood, died Saturday, June 18. He was 91.

He was born to the late Matthew Moon and Leola Akridge Moon Burke in Shelby, N.C. He grew up in Englewood and attended Englewood Public Schools until he received the call to serve the U.S. in the Navy (1943-46). He traveled extensively during his tour. His favorite place being Hawaii. 

After serving, he returned home. While on a road trip with one of his buddies, one young lady caught his eye, Willene Ellerby whom ultimately became his wife. They had no children, but were blessed with nieces, nephews and Godchildren. He played Santa every year to all the children, spreading holiday cheer.

He loved yard work, baking, and sharing sweet potato pies, blueberry pies and sour cream pound cakes with his neighbors and friends.

He is survived by twin sisters, Mary Burke Williams of Michigan and Vera Burke Belle of North Carolina; seven nieces, Kim Thomas, Deborah Hickerson, Gail Jackson, Annie Thomas, Donna Williams Lewis, Renee Williams and Wendy Jackson; 14 great-nieces and great-nephews; 27 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; four great-great-great-nieces and great-great-great-nephews; cousins, Elnora Smith, Mabel Williams and Betty Gilcrest; Godchildren, Raymond "Skip" Ryland and Sandra Taylot; longtime family friends, The Ryland Family, The Owens Family, The Nelson Family and Mrs. Hazel McGregor and Mrs. Muse of Teaneck; and special friends, Ruth Harris, Connie Roman, Javier Garcia and Shimi Mendalaw from his favorite place, The Golden Grill; and a host of other family and friends

He was predeceased by his wife, Willene; twin brothers, Ralph and Roy Moon; and two sisters, Lily Moon Hickerson and Agnes Moon Thomas.

Visitation will take place from 9-10 a.m. Saturday at Eternity Funeral Services, LLC, 129 Engle St., Englewood. The funeral service will follow at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at noon at George Washington Memorial Park.
