"There were several individuals in the parking lot" of the Westmoor Apartments on Slocum Avenue around 6 p.m. when the car pulled up, Suffern said.

A passenger "fired multiple shots at them."

The 25-year-old city resident shot in the foot was taken to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, he said.

Meanwhile, detectives were sorting through conflicting witness accounts. For instance, Suffern said, they didn't know for certain whether the gunman walked up and pulled the trigger or fired from a getaway car.

The chief also couldn't confirm reports that a .45-caliber handgun was believed used.

Neighbor Carlos Ballast told Daily Voice: "I was in my house when I heard shots -- from five to seven shots. I was in the kitchen. I don't know who got hit.

"I just stayed put. I didn't bother to look outside, to be honest, after that," he said. "I just heard gunshots and stayed in the crib.

"I did not try to find out."
