ENGLEWOOD, N.J. -- A Teaneck ex-con with a more-than 20-year rap sheet had several thousand dollars in merchandise and cash off-loaded from a truck stolen in Paramus when Englewood police stopped him and an alleged accomplice -- another convicted criminal from the Bronx, authorities said Tuesday.
Paramus police alerted their Englewood colleagues that a GPS tracking device showed that a box truck stolen from their borough was on West Sheffield Avenue in the city, Detective Capt. Timothy Torell said.
The truck, owned by “Compass Group USA,” out of Mount Laurel, "was used as a vending machine delivery and pick-up vehicle," Torell said.
In addition to picking up and delivering food and beverage items for the machines, the driver also collects cash and drops it into a safe installed in the vehicle, he added.
Responding Officers Jerel Hammond and Nathaniel Kinlaw saw man get out of the stolen truck and hop into a mini-van that they stopped as it tried to leave the southwest industrial section of the city, the captain said.
Inside the van was the merchandise and cash off-loaded from the truck, he said.
"They came prepared," Torell said: Officers found an acetylene torch, a slap-hammer and other tools that "appeared to have been used to enter the vehicle, pop the ignition and break into the on-board safe" in the van.
Robert “Greg” Callahan, 54, of Teaneck -- whose recorded offenses since 1994 number in the dozens -- and 59-year-old Gregory Treadwell of the Bronx were each charged with possession of stolen property and burglary tools.
A judge later ordered both released without bail from the Bergen County Jail pending a court hearing.
"This investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are possible," Torell told Daily Voice. "We are in the process of attempting to retrieve area video surveillance footage in both Paramus and Englewood."
The captain also lauded the "great joint effort" between the Englewood and Paramus departments.
