YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Route 4 gas station attendant was beaten by a man with a baseball bat in an apparent robbery attempt early this morning before he wrested it away and chased him off, police said.
The assailant pulled into the westbound station in Englewood’s “gasoline alley” in a white car ( above ) just before 6 a.m., Detective Capt. Timothy Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT tonight.
The 54-year-old attendant told police the driver leaned into the doorway of the store area ( above ) and told him he couldn’t unlock the station bathroom.
When he went outside to help, he was attacked, he said.
The attendant eventually grabbed control of the bat and the assailant took off, Torell said.
“As best as we can tell at this point, the suspect left with nothing,” the captain said.
The attendant described him as black, dark-skinned, wearing a red cap, gray jacket and light-colored hooded sweater over the cap.
“We have some very significant leads and physical evidence in this case. We are also working on enhancing the video,” Torell said. “We’re hoping that someone in the public will recognize this guy and call it in before he hurts, or even kills, someone else.”
He asked that anyone with information that can help Englewood detectives call them: (201) 568-4875
The station was closed for several hours this morning while they and investigators from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office processed the scene, the captain said.
