ONLY ON CVP: A man stopped his car just before 6 a.m. this morning on the George Washington Bridge just past the west tower, got out, climbed over the railing to the walkway and then over the outer railing, witnesses told Port Authority police — who, as of 9:40 a.m., hadn’t recovered a body yet. On top of that, he was driving someone else’s car. READ MORE….
Someone in the park called parkway police at 2 p.m., saying he or she had found a walker and a walking cane placed against a railing in the southeast corner.
Officers found the items, along with 45-year-old Kenneth Costello car, parked in a handicapped spot.
“Contact was made with a family member at the same time officers identified indicators that showed where someone had recently fallen from the cliff,” Lt. Michael Coppola said.
Officers then traced Costello’s cellphone to the bottom of the cliffs at the lookout.
Soon after, Coppola said, they found the body about 225 down from the top. He was brought down to Henry Hudson Drive and positively identified, with help from the Englewood Cliffs Fire Department and the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s Office, the lieutenant said.
“At this time, information provided and discovered throughout the investigation leads no current reason to believe that suspicious circumstances may have been involved,” he said. “Cause of death is being determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.”
