An arbitration ruling in a labor dispute led to promotions for officers who were doing the work of higher-ranked counterparts in lieu of three years’ worth of retro pay.
In turn, the police union agreed to pass up hundreds of thousands of dollars in back pay that those officers should have received.
As a result, Englewood Cliffs Police Chief Michael Cioffi will have 15 ranking officers and 10 patrol officers — thanks to the department’s first promotions in five years — and the borough will pay $80,000 more in police salaries this year instead of anywhere from $300,000 to $500,000.
The chief told CLIFFVIEW PILOT that the six new sergeants will work the Patrol Division, keeping a full complement of officers on the street.
Cioffi wished all of the promoted officers success.
“I know that I have made the correct decision to advance our department,” the chief said.
