Leonia Musicians Perform Pre-Election Concert

LEONIA, N.J. -- The Leonia Chamber Musicians Society will launches its new season on Sunday, Nov. 6, with a special American pre-election themed concert.

The program highlight the woodwinds, through the music of American composers Samuel Barber and Vincent Persichetti, as well as show off the strings, through the music of Antonín Leopold Dvořák and Scott Joplin.

Performers will include Cenovia Cummins and Roy Lewis on violin, Jack Rosenberg on viola, Daryl Goldberg on cello, Theresa Norris on flute, Marsha Heller on oboe; Chris Cullen on clarinet, Atsuko Donaruma on bassoon, and R.J. Kelley on French horn.

Tickets are available at the door. They are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors and free for students under 18. A season subscription, for all three concerts, is $80 for adults and $65 for seniors. You can up for the season, and get the discount, at Sunday's concert.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Leonia United Methodist Church, 396 Broad Ave., in Leonia.

A second concert will present a program with Spanish flavor, featuring Cynthia Phelps, principal viola with the New York Philharmonic. The Leonia Chamber Musicians will perform on Sunday, Feb. 5, at 4 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, 150 Park Ave., in Leonia. The church is wheelchair accessible.

The season will close on April 23, with a 7:30 p.m. concert, as the group returns to All Saints Episcopal Church, to perform a concert spotlighting music by popular request.

Refreshments will be served after each concert, and the audience will have an opportunity to meet the musicians.

The nonprofit "enriches the cultural environment of the community by presenting a series of high quality, affordable and accessible chamber music concerts," organizers note. "The members of the Leonia Chamber Musicians generate the excitement of a live performance with professional talent: all of them perform in the major concert halls of New York City."

Additionally, "Music for the programs is selected to educate the audience about different periods and styles of music. Throughout the concerts, presentations are given about the music being played, the composers, the musicians and related subjects."
