Englewood PD: Bank Robber May Be Local, Reward Offered

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. -- Englewood police on Wednesday released a surveillance image of a masked bank robber who wore rubber gloves and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash from the NVE branch on Grand Avenue five minutes before closing time Monday.

They think he or she might live in the area.

The tall robber entered the bank at 4:55 p.m. wearing a dark-colored hoodie up, sunglasses and "something light-colored covering the bottom portion" of his or her face, Detective Capt. Timothy Torell told Daily Voice.

The robber "held up a note with writing on it while giving verbal instructions and demanding a certain amount of money from the teller, who thought the voice was that of a male," Torell said.

A citizen confronted the robber trying to take a bicycle on Lake Court after fleeing out a back door of the bank, and the bandit ran off toward Broad Avenue, the captain said.

"Nobody was hurt and the FBI was notified," Torell said.

Meanwhile, the Bergen County Sheriff's Bureau of Criminal Identification collected evidence.

"Trying to steal a bicycle for escape is not a common move an experienced bank robber would make," Torell said.

For that reason, he said, "we believe that the [robber] may live in that immediate area or had an accomplice perhaps waiting in a getaway vehicle who may have fled prematurely when the quick and heavy response of our officers and neighboring officers flooded the area.

"All we need is a call, which we can keep confidential, from a relative, friend, neighbor or anyone who noticed someone come into a significant amount of cash with no reasonable explanation," Torell said.

"We need to identify this individual and get the suspect in custody before another bank is robbed," he said.

The Bergenfield-Englewood-Teaneck-Hackensack Crimestoppers group is offering a cash reward of up to $1,000 cash reward for any information leading to an arrest or the recovery of any of the cash or other evidence from the holdup.

Citizens can call city detectives directly at (201) 568-4875 or the Crimestoppers hotline at any time at 1-844-466-6789 . They can even “ SUBMIT A TIP ” on the website at www.bergencrimestoppers.org .
