Officers Gianluca Ragone and James Morgan responded to a 3:39 a.m. fire alarm, along with firefighters, and spotted Sehyun K. Lee through a rear window, Sgt. Justin Fox said.
"He was incoherent and hallucinating" when the officers took him into custody, Fox said.
In just under 10 minutes, Lee had smashed glass trophy cases, rifled through lockers and ripped various items off the walls, the sergeant said.
He admitted taking a drug called Morning Glory, Fox said.
A short time earlier, the 5-foot-6-inch, 140-pound Lee broke into a Jeep parked on an adjacent street, ripped off a visor and damaged the interior before heading to the school, he said.
Surveillance cameras captured Lee using a bar to break the glass on a west side entrance door, then prying it open, Fox said.
Lee, who has a prior history of drug and criminal mischief offenses, was first taken to Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus in the custody of Bergen County Sheriff's officers.
He was later transferred to the Bergen County Jail, where he remained held Sunday on $100,000 bail -- $50,000 for the school vandalism and $50,000 for the Jeep.
Lee has been there before. Fort Lee police police arrested him for drugs and other offenses in Fort Lee in 2013 and 2014, records show.
He was also arrested last year in Edgewater for marijuana possession, in Palisades Park for theft and in Fort Lee for failing to surrender drugs to police and drinking while underage, records show.
Four Bergen County Sheriff's K-9 units swept Haworth Public School after the incident "as a precautionary measure," Fox said. "No contraband was found."
A few early arrivals Friday remained briefly in the gym as the searches concluded, and then classes were conducted as usual, he said.
