Jesus Lopez, 30, remained in custody at River Edge Medical Center (formerly Bergen Regional) in Paramus pending a detention hearing.

He's charged with murder, desecrating human remains, hindering apprehension and weapons possession.

Police arrested Lopez after a case worker who visited him found Susana Lopez's decomposed body in a detached garage, law enforcement sources said.

"After making contact with Jesus Lopez, who was inside the home, further investigation revealed that he had murdered his mother days earlier, and that her remains were on the property," Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said Wednesday morning.

"Police subsequently located her remains in a detached garage adjacent to the residence," he said.

It appeared her throat had been slashed, according to the Bergen County Medical Examiner.

Law enforcement sources said Lopez had been known to collect knives.

Jesus Lopez was known to police -- including a 2009 arrest on charges of threatening to kill officers during a drug arrest.

Records show he'd also been arrested in recent years on drug charges and a driving-while-suspended offense.

A detention hearing date had yet to be set, the prosecutor said.
