Video Shows Englewood Drive-By Shooting

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. -- A video released by Englewood police Tuesday afternoon of a drive-by shooting shows the gun stuck out the passenger window and several muzzle flashes -- as the intended targets duck for cover.

A 25-year-old city man who was among a group being fired at was hit in the foot and was scheduled for surgery Tuesday, Detective Capt. Tim Torell told Daily Voice.

"We are hoping to have the footage enhanced by the FBI lab which may reveal more details, including a license plate number," Torell said.

"In addition, we have determined that this was, in no way, a random shooting," he said. "At least one individual in that group was specifically targeted as a result of an ongoing dispute between several city residents over the last few months."

The light-colored vehicle -- possibly a white Toyota Camry -- pulled into the parking lot of the Westmoor Gardens housing complex near Building #6 around 5:45 p.m., Torell said.

Four people were inside, "including a small child," the captain said.

The video shows the car passing a group of men who Torell said are in their late teens and early 20’s.

Then it circles back.

"A black male leaned out and opened fire on the group from the front passenger seat," Torell said. "The vehicle then fled westbound on Slocum Avenue and out of the area."

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Department Bureau of Criminal Identification recovered seven large-caliber shell casings, which law enforcement sources told Daily Voice were .45-caliber.

City detectives "have been working throughout the night and this morning and we have made significant progress in the investigation," Torell said.

"We are urging those people in that car to come forward and provide us information as to the identity of the actual shooter," he added.

"We suspect that the guardian of that small child was unaware that the shooting was about to take place," Torell said, "but we need to talk with that person as soon as possible.

"The fact that there was a child in the car and the nature of the shooting being so depraved, makes the need for this case to be resolved extremely urgent."

Anyone with information that could help the investigation is urged to contact the Englewood Detective Bureau: (201) 568-4875 . A cash reward is also being offered through the Englewood/Bergenfield/Teaneck/Hackensack Crimestoppers group at 1-844-466-6789 .
